*Published July 31, 2026* --- I was diagnosed on the autism spectrum in 2026. Late, after decades of treating the same pattern as personality: go dark, ship hard, miss the room. Deep-work culture names half of that: protect the block, say no, be unapologetic about focus. The other half is a character review: difficult, cold, unavailable. Depression and anxiety often get a medical frame. AS-class room-missing often gets a moral one. **The same attention strategy that finishes hard work can also blank the people next to you.** Chaos and delivery can share a mechanism. You do not need my diagnosis for the test later. The diagnosis is why I stopped scoring only one side. ## The dual line In 2005, Dinah Murray, Mike Lesser, and Wendy Lawson argued that autism involves atypical allocation of scarce attention: [monotropic](https://para.ngpcloud.org/monotropism) minds pour it into few highly aroused interests (a torch beam); polytropic minds spread it thinner ([Murray, Lesser & Lawson, *Autism* 9(2)](https://doi.org/10.1177/1362361305051398); [monotropism.org](https://monotropism.org/murray-lesser-lawson/)). Dual valence without poetry: monotropic focus means both **tending to perform the task well** and **tending to lose awareness of information relevant to all other tasks**. Good at the task in the tunnel, blind outside it. I use that Murray line on a pattern I live. The shipping half of the title rides Murray's "tending to." What I can offer as product is the Monday test and the household hold-tos, not a biopic. The personal episode below is Aim failure only. It does not prove dual valence. I will not invent a dinner-table ship that also drops the room. Grimes, in Isaacson's *Elon Musk*, gives a street name for one dark form: demon mode. Murray is the architecture. Grimes is the label. Skeptic: ordinary hyperfocus or selfishness in clinical dress. Fair when those fit. The monotropism frame earns its keep when the pattern is stable, costly to switch, and bills both sides (depth inside, blindness outside). If your deep work never drops the room, this is not about you. If it drops the room and you only count commits, it is. ## What deep work leaves off the invoice Builder culture already knows clean hours beat interrupted ones. What it usually refuses to price is the other side of the same spend. If attention is scarce and monotropic strategy dumps it into one channel, eye contact and listening can compete. Single-channel processing is often resource allocation rather than chosen cruelty. A "quick question" can demand full tunnel demolition. Partners and colleagues experience coldness while the person inside is not receiving the channel. Match judgment to mechanism. Harm still counts. ## Not every dark tunnel ships Megan Anna Neff's AuDHD masking work describes burying into research or projects to escape open loops ([Neurodivergent Insights](https://neurodivergentinsights.com/episodes/when-autism-hides-adhd/)). Output can be real. Depth can still be flight. "I shipped" is not proof of productive dual valence. Shipping can be the costume avoidance wears. The tunnel can also miss the work itself: special-interest intensity can displace grades or lock a thesis against contradictory tape (pattern sketches only). Hyperfocus is strength or weakness by context ([Ashinoff & Abu-Akel](https://doi.org/10.1007/s00426-019-01245-8); Dwyer on [exogenous capture](https://www.autisticscholar.com/monotropism/)). Monotropism is useful architecture and incomplete as a total theory of autism. Soft-zone skill (Waitzkin, *The Art of Learning*) still matters: permanent hard-zone is fragile. I have no rate data for productive versus defensive retreat. I will not invent a percentage. Use a test. ## A test anyone can run Monday No autism label required. One deep session you are about to defend. **1. Aim.** Work that should ship, or sharpest salience (dashboard, rank, red number)? Documented Aim failure only (not dual-valence proof): Math Academy Day 62 (2026-07-03), first day back after twelve days off. Completion estimate jumped mid-August → January 2027. League Emerald → Ruby. Both artifacts; XP and course percent still rose. Adverse numbers hijacked the sitting. Scores ran clean pass → bonus-inflated set → hard miss. Tunnel locked on the metric, not the math. **2. Motive.** Pursuing, or fleeing? If the session reliably coincides with unanswered messages, unpaid bills, or family logistics you will not open, treat it as defensive until proven otherwise. Output does not clear the charge. I am not staging a household scene for this leg. Coincidence pattern is the signal. **3. Recovery.** Re-entry cost? If household or next task needs a long empty stretch after exit, the tunnel was expensive. Transition is not free because the commit landed. Wrong-target, flight, or brutal recovery: monotropic event. Re-aim the next sitting. ## Family and sovereignty Family weights time, money, and attention over paid performance theater. Sovereignty over attention also matters: no system dictates my pace by default. The tunnel is that collision, not a detour around it. Protecting a hard block can be fidelity to how this brain works, or refusal of legitimate care claims when the open loops are the people I live with. Sovereign move: named blocks, advance warning, planned wind-down. Not "never interrupt me." A monotropic ship usually has a bill. Someone pays it. If I do not name the payer, I am doing the inspirational half again. Hold-tos, starting this week: 1. Deep blocks on a calendar the household can see. Surprise darkness earns "difficult." 2. If deep work is metabolizing unanswered life systems, open the pile first or make the pile the tunnel. 3. Timed family claim: exit on a timer. Soft-zone at home means not making the people I love pay for every torch beam. 4. Never use diagnosis as a license. Mechanism is not a free pass for contempt. For a teammate who protects focus and gets written up as cold: make the tunnel's bill visible before the write-up lands. ## Stop scoring one side I am not claiming all deep work is autistic, or that monotropism is complete science, or that unavailability is genius with better branding. If you already live in deep-work discourse and also go dark, room drop and commit can be the same architecture. Run the Monday test. Put household cost on the invoice. Murray's line: perform the task well, lose the rest, then decide whether that was the trade you meant. --- ## Sources - Monotropism (vault foundation). https://para.ngpcloud.org/monotropism - Murray D, Lesser M, Lawson W.
