Some experts estimate **90% of human communication is nonverbal**. Individuals with AS often do not register or cannot interpret nonverbal cues — tone of voice, facial expression, posture, emphasis.
The "step foot on property" case (Dan & Barbara): Dan heard Barbara's words literally and kept his promise based on her exact words. He missed the nonverbal emphasis that conveyed how strongly she felt. Barbara assumed he would understand her meaning — he only heard the words.
One woman with AS described her difficulty interpreting NT nonverbal communication as **"like having dyslexia."** Nonverbal communication doesn't register, or if a change in voice or expression is detected, it can't be interpreted correctly.
