Monotropism is a concept describing autism primarily as a **difference in attention allocation**, not as a global deficit of intelligence, empathy, or willpower. A monotropic mind tends to put most of its available cognitive energy into **one narrow channel** at a time. A polytropic mind tends to spread smaller amounts of attention across **many channels** at once.
That single architectural choice is the load-bearing claim. Hyperfocus, special interests, difficulty switching tasks, sensory overload, and “not hearing” someone mid-task are treated as **downstream effects of the same allocation pattern**, not as a pile of unrelated symptoms.
## The problem the theory solves
Common accounts of autism list traits (rigid routines, intense interests, meltdowns, social friction) without a shared mechanism. Monotropism supplies one: **how the nervous system budgets attention**.
- If the budget is spent as a deep single tunnel, depth and expertise become cheap; breadth, multitasking, and smooth switching become expensive.
- If the budget is spent as a shallow bouquet of channels, switching and peripheral awareness stay cheap; sustained single-thread depth is rarer.
Neither style is universally better. Match the environment to the architecture and monotropic traits look like strengths. Mismatch them and the same architecture looks like pathology.

### Attention tunnel
When monotropic attention fully commits to one channel, theorists describe an **attention tunnel**:
1. Processing **inside** is deep, thorough, and intense.
2. The state is often **calm and regulated** — the opposite of overwhelm.
3. Information **outside** the tunnel is heavily filtered or blocked at the perceptual level (e.g. genuine failure to hear speech while focused is not the same as rudeness).
For monotropic minds, the tunnel is closer to a **native operating mode** than to rare “flow.” Polytropic minds may enter something like flow only under ideal conditions and prize it because it is uncommon.
### Transition cost
Because so much resource is inside the current tunnel, **shifting focus is costly**. The architecture does not glide attention across channels; it must largely **dismantle** one tunnel and **build** another.
Downstream labels:
- **Autistic inertia** — hard to start (cold-start tunnel) and hard to stop (destroying a working tunnel).
- **High cost of unexpected interruption** — “just one quick question” forces a full rebuild of loaded context, not a small context-switch tax.

- Passion that outsiders read as “obsession”
- Career leverage when work is aligned with the natural channel rather than treated as a defect to suppress
### Overload as tunnel fragmentation
When too many streams demand attention at once (task + sensory load + social cues + ambient change), the monotropic strategy still tries to **tunnel deeply** instead of skimming. Tunnels **fragment**. Typical cascade:
1. Cognitive fatigue
2. Executive dysfunction (no single channel can claim enough resource)
3. Meltdown or shutdown when recovery capacity is exceeded
Accommodations that protect **tunnel coherence** (single-tasking, low sensory competition, recovery time) are upstream; “sensory comfort” is the surface description.
### Defensive monotropism (related pattern)
In some AuDHD presentations, the same deep-tunnel capacity can be used to **block** accumulated open loops (email pile, chores, life admin) rather than to pursue a chosen priority. Output may still be real and rewarded as “discipline,” while the avoided stack grows. Diagnostic signal: deep sessions reliably coincide with fleeing specific categories of maintenance, and the same depth is unavailable *on* those avoided tasks.

- **Explains without moralizing** — many “symptoms” are predictable costs of a depth-first architecture under breadth-first environments.
- **Reframes accommodation** — protect long blocks, warn before transitions, reduce simultaneous streams; that is enabling the architecture, not indulging it.
- **Separates ability from protection** — monotropic capacity for sustained single-thread thought may be native; the scarce resource is often **protecting the tunnel**, not training the ability into existence.
