The emotional experience in AS spans two extremes. Some feel emotions too intensely and become overwhelmed. **Others experience a genuine lack of feelings** — an emotional flatness that is the opposite of hyper-arousal.
**Case (p179):** A successful businessman diagnosed with AS months earlier wondered if AS was why he "never felt anything." Business deals were easy because he never got emotional. When asked about his mother's recent death: *"I don't feel anything. I do find myself thinking about not having to send her a check every month anymore."* He had been generous and responsible toward her, but felt no closeness — to her or anyone else.
Another man reported he "felt like he just watched life but took no part in it." Asked about emotions, he simply responded: *"I don't think I have any."*
This is distinct from alexithymia (not having words for feelings). These individuals genuinely do not register emotional experience. This can be an advantage in high-pressure careers (business, surgery, crisis management) but creates profound disconnection in personal relationships.
