"Getting the gist" — the ability to synthesize multiple information sources into a higher-level meaning — is automatic for NTs but often absent in AS. **The police officer vs friend example:** The same words "You are going to get into trouble for that" have opposite meanings depending on who says it, their tone, their expression, and the context. An NT instantly reads all these channels. A person with AS may hear only the literal words. **The vacation memory gap (David & Tracy):** David remembered exact meals (steak, baked potatoes, peach pie). Tracy remembered exhaustion, frustration, all the work she did. David's AS meant Tracy's feelings never registered, so they weren't part of his memory. Both were accurate — they remembered fundamentally different things. NTs need to be explicit about their internal state. "I was exhausted and resentful" cannot be implied — it must be stated directly for someone who processes single-channel and misses emotional context. **Source:** Lovett, *Solutions for Adults with Asperger Syndrome*, Ch 3 (pp71-78) See also: [[AS-NT Cross-Cultural Communication]], [[Central Coherence Weak vs Strong]]
