## Overview
Anthropic's $200/month Claude Code plan is not a profit center; it is a marketing expense. Most users consume less than $200 in inference, but power users easily exceed $1000+, making the plan a net loss. Those power users become unpaid evangelists who post about it, tell coworkers, and drive adoption. The strategy only works if evangelism drives ecosystem lock-in: users committed to Claude Code and the Anthropic Agents SDK. Once locked in, Anthropic no longer needs the "best model" to retain revenue: the harness and developer ecosystem become the moat. This mirrors classic platform economics where subsidizing power users builds switching costs that outlast any single model generation's technical advantage.
