Audacity compounds like financial interest, but invisibly. Low-agency people and shy introverts systematically underperform not because they lack ability but because they talk themselves out of low-cost, high-payoff asks. Each skipped ask is a missed compounding opportunity. The compounding is "invisible" because you never see the counterfactual: the raise you did not ask for, the connection you did not make, the project you did not pitch.
The key insight is that "most rules are illusory": the constraints people perceive (you cannot ask for more, it would be rude, they will rescind the offer) are self-imposed narratives, not actual rules. Breaking illusory rules costs nothing and occasionally yields asymmetric returns.
