A critical dynamic in AS-NT relationships: the **recovery gap** after an emotional outburst.
- The person with AS has the outburst, releases the tension, and moves on — acting as though nothing happened
- The NT partner is still shaken, hurt, and processing what happened
- When the NT is still upset, the AS person becomes annoyed — "why are you still upset?"
- The NT feels frustrated, angry, and left with no resolution
**Lillian and Manny (cruise ship):** Lillian (AS) lashed out at Manny over a minor joke after a long travel day. She returned to their cabin, the outburst ran its course, and she promptly forgot about it. Manny was still shaken. When he returned, she behaved as if nothing had happened. He didn't understand why she attacked him or why she acted as if nothing was wrong.
This gap creates repeated cycles of pain and misunderstanding. The NT needs to understand the AS tendency; the AS person needs to learn that the impact of their outburst lasts beyond its immediate expression.
