Asperger Syndrome is a **neurodevelopmental condition**, not a mental illness. This distinction is foundational. Neurodevelopmental refers to the development and growth of neurons — in AS, this growth doesn't follow the usual progression. The result is a brain that processes information differently, especially social information. AS belongs to the **pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs)** — they affect many areas of life across the lifespan. It is: - A developmental **difference**, not a delay - Neither outgrown nor curable - Hardwired — no medication exists for it - Genetically influenced (cause not fully understood) "Faulty parenting" does not cause AS (refuting the discredited "refrigerator mother" theory). **Source:** Lovett, *Solutions for Adults with Asperger Syndrome*, Ch 1 (pp20-21, p40) See also: [[Autistic Triad]]
