Akrasia is the ancient Greek term for acting against one's better judgment — knowing what is right but not doing it. Paul names it in Romans 7: "I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing." This is not a modern phenomenon; it is the central problem of ethics and execution.
## The Pattern
The gap between knowing and doing is not an information problem. The person understands the correct action — and still does not take it. Aristotle called this failure of practical reason *akrasia*; the Stoics and early Christians built entire disciplines around overcoming it.
Cicero's diagnosis: moral goodness requires more than intellectual conviction. The mind must be trained to obey judgment — and this training requires *physical* discipline. Cicero explicitly links bodily training to mental mastery: discipline imposed on the body teaches the mind that it can be commanded.

1. **Thought arises** — the impulse, desire, or avoidance pattern
2. **Judgment knows better** — the deliberative faculty identifies the right action
