Over the final three seconds before an action, physical momentum, neurological reflexes, and physiological baselines dominate. Your active agency collapses to near zero. Most personal productivity advice fails because it treats agency as constant across all three timeframes. It tells people to apply willpower inside the three-second window: resist the urge to open the browser tab, decline the drink, push through exhaustion, or force deep focus. This is the weakest possible lever. Trying to win the battle at the moment of execution ignores the physics of decision-making. High agency functions as an upstream engineering discipline rather than a moral triumph of in-the-moment grit. --- ## The Mid-Air Bullet and the Collapse of Choice In *Progression* (2016), Sebastian Marshall illustrates this timeframe collapse with two physical moments. A sniper's bullet hangs mid-air, inches from a soldier. Even if the soldier realizes what is happening, human reaction speed cannot dodge lead in flight.
